Australian Writing
104 students from BBI participated in 2011 and gained:
- 3 High Distinctions (top 1%)
- 34 Distinctions (top 10%)
- 41 Credits (top 25%)
High Distinctions were awarded to Mieke Terblanche, Bowun Su, and Danny Xie.
We had one Year 8 student, Mieke Terblanche, awarded a medal for achieving Top in New Zealand.

Speeches
In August, the schoolʼs annual speech competitions were held. Each student presented a prepared speech to the class. Class finalists competed at team finals with the best two contestants from each team finally presenting their speeches to the school.

The winners of the prepared section were:

2nd: Bronte Croad
3rd: Xavier Guy

The winners of the impromptu section were:
1st: Pranika Arisht
2nd: Zachary Wong
3rd: Visalini Gunathas

Pranika represented the school and came second in both sections at the Eastern Zone Speech Competition.

Korean Speeches
1st: Seo Young Ahn
2nd: Jennifer Kim

Seo Young represented BBI at the Auckland Korean speech competition in late September.

Mathex Competition
2011 Year 7 team finished 1st. Year 8 team finished 1st.
2010 Year 7 team finished 2nd equal. Year 8 team finished 3rd equal.
2009 Competed but were not placed.
2008 Competed but were not placed.
2007 Year 7 A team finished 1st.
2006 Year 7 A team finished 1st. Year 7 B team finished 6th.
Year 8 A team finished 4th.
2005 Year 7 team finished 4th. The B team finished 5th.
Year 8 A team finished 1st. The B team finished 5th.
2004 Year 7 A team finished 1st.
Year 8 A team finished 1st, the B team finished 2nd. This was the third year in a row that BBI teams were placed first in both Year 7 and Year 8.
2003 Year 7 A Team finished 1st.
Year 8 A team finished 1st, the B team finished 4th. This was the second year in a row that BBI teams were placed first in both Year 7 and Year 8.
2002 Year 7 A team finished 1st, the B team took 4th place.
Year 8 A team finished 1st and the B team finished 6th.

Singapore Mathematical Olympiad
2006 BBI students took 6 of the 8 places in the team travelling Singapore for the Olympiad Competition. Samantha Tan was placed in the top 20 in the Singapore competition.
1996 The team entered achieved the highest score in New Zealand.
Kenneth Wu gained the second highest individual result and David Chua was 9th.

Australian Mathematics Olympiad
Two teams from BBI received an award for Outstanding Maths Achievement.
One student achieved a perfect score and 31 achieved in the top 10%.

Otago Problem Challenge
In this competition students answer five questions in 30 minutes on each of five problem sheets, which are done about a month apart. See www.maths.otago.ac.nz/pc/ for more information.
In 2008 five Year 8 students and three Year 7 students received prizes for achieving outstanding results.

Science Fair
BBI’s annual Science Fair was held during August in 2011. It was gratifying to see the high standard of presentation and the ingenious and innovative nature of the investigations undertaken by our students. Each exhibit obviously represented many hours of planning, research, dedication and perseverance by each student during the weeks prior to the Science Fair. From the large number of exhibits, some were chosen to go through to the Manukau Institute of Technology Science Fair competition and competed against college students. The following students were placed:

We are very pleased and also very proud of our on going high results in the Australasian exams. Students are invited to sit these exams. They are encouraged but ultimately it is their choice.
Since first entering into these competitions in 1992 we have had one or more students top in one or more of these exams every single year. This is an outstanding achievement and says much about the high standards we are able to maintain year after year.
