About BBI Welcome to Bucklands Beach Intermediate School's school website. Our school has a unique character, as it caters for students in the intermediate school years (11-13 years) and even though we have a short time with the students we make the most of every opportunity. We are a multicultural school within Auckland, New Zealand where we value the bicultural nature of our country. At BBI we respect and embrace the official language of Te Reo Maori. By learning Te Reo and becoming increasing familiar with tikanga (culture and custom), Maori students strength their identity and non-Maori students journey towards shared cultural understandings. We pride ourselves on giving our students the best possible education, where academic excellence is celebrated. Our staff are fully trained and dedicated to promoting life long learners with a love for learning.I am very proud to be the Principal of BBI. Approximately 800 students currently attend our school. BBI is recognised as a leading Intermediate School in New Zealand with a strong focus on student learning. We aim to develop truly independent learners who gain an understanding that they can make a positive difference for their own future. We expect students to realise that learning is a process in which they participate with learning being seen as something they do, not something done to them. For more see curriculum pages. In November 2012, BBI became an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme World School. A verification visit to measure our level of progress towards our goal of becoming an IB World School took place in September 2012. IB PYP schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that BBI believes is important for our students. The announcement of our authorisation was due reward after 4 years of dedication and collaboration, working towards our aim. For further information about the IB and its programmes, visit http://www.ibo.org The school is divided geographically into six teams, with usually four classrooms in each team. Between classrooms are courtyards with seating, planting and room for socialisation at lunch time.A large information centre incorporates a library and computer suite with a dedicated room for media creation and the daily school broadcast. Outside are two large courts for sports, a field, an artificial turf and challenge course. Beside the school hall are a number of rooms devoted to specialist classes including a workshop, art facilities with a kiln and lino press, kitchens, drawing and airbrushing equipment. The performing arts centre is a widely used building for class presentations, arts practices, and has foldback tiered seating to allow the space to be used in a number of ways.

- Assessment | BBI2020
Assessment Philosophy and rationale for Assessment at Bucklands Beach Intermediate According to ‘Making the PYP Happen’, a school’s assessment policy “is not a static document but one that is constantly evolving to reflect the assessment needs of the school.” For this reason, we will need to make sure the assessment policy is reviewed and revised every few years. All staff at BBI should be involved in the development and will need to agree on the assessment policy. All staff are responsible to ensure that the assessment policy is a working document and that it is referred to and reflected upon. Assessment is the process of gathering evidence and making valid judgements about students’ achievements, needs and progress. Evaluation is the analysis of this information to make judgements about the effectiveness of teaching programmes, and to determine continuing teaching and learning . (text from BBI policy and procedures) What does effective assessment look like at BBI? It allows students to: Demonstrate and share their learning and understanding Set goals with regards to learning Use their own learning strategies and build on their own strengths Build confidence in their own work and self Express their points of view and understanding Understand what their own needs are and how to improve Make connections between what they are learning and the real world. Understand in advance the criteria for producing a quality product or performance Participate in reflection, self and peer assessment Learn how to construct their own assessment and next steps in learning. Teachers will: Use data to inform every stage of the teaching and learning process Collaboratively reflect on student progress and needs Differentiate or adapt their instruction Plan for assessment opportunities Develop professional knowledge of diagnostic, formative and summative assessment. Regular reflection on Units of Inquiry Encourage parents to: Understand student learning and progress Provide support outside of school Celebrate learning and student accomplishments
