- Board of Trustees | BBI2020
Board of Trustees All of New Zealand's state and state-integrated schools have a board of trustees. The board of trustees is the Crown entity responsible for the governance and the control of the management of the school. The board is the employer of all staff in the school, is responsible for setting the school's strategic direction in consultation with parents, staff and students, and ensuring that its school provides a safe environment and quality education for all its students. Boards are also responsible for overseeing the management of personnel, curriculum, property, finance and administration. The Board of Trustees is entrusted to work on behalf of all stakeholders and is accountable for the school’s performance. It emphasises strategic leadership, sets the vision for the school, and ensures that it complies with legal and policy requirements. Policies are at a governance level and outline clear delegations to the principal. At Bucklands Beach Intermediate our Board of Trustees is comprised of 8 elected members which meet monthly on a Wednesday night. Elections for Board of Trustee positions are held every 18 months. If you would like more information about applying to be a trustee or if you would like to attend a board meeting please email mailbox@bbi.school.nz Current Board of Trustee elected members: Alan Figgins (Chairperson) Diane Parkinson (Principal) Chris Griffiths Wendy Levy Chris Barnes Leonie Wallace Jocelyn Cameron Anne Burgess (Staff Trustee) Board of Trustees Profiles Alan Figgins - Chairperson I have been a trustee at Bucklands Beach Intermediate School for about eight years, looking after finance, strategic planning, and now as Chair of the Board of Trustees. I have also been a trustee at a primary school, and am also a trustee at Macleans College. Professionally, I have been an accountant, IT consultant, and business consultant for more than twenty years. Over the years, I have also been a coach / manager for both the Howick & Pakuranga Cricket Club, and Howick Pakuranga Hockey Club. BBI is clearly a well positioned school. It has an excellent team of teachers under Diane Parkinson’s leadership with a strong culture of achievement. The board has been achieved much over the ten years and I want to see a continuation of the success that has seen BBI perform so well, academically, culturally, and in the sports arena. I believe that it is the responsibility of the Board to support and lead the development of the school in line with the values set out in the school's vision and mission statements, to implement and maintain an effective governance structure, and to both support and hold accountable the leadership team as they facilitate each student in realising their full potential. I welcome discussion with, and input from, the school and wider community. If you would like to contact me, please email or call via the school. Anne Burgess - Staff Representative It is a privilege to have been elected as the Staff Representative on the Board of Trustees by the staff of BBI. I have worked at BBI since 1999, beginning as a Year 8 teacher and becoming a senior teacher/team leader in 2008. Before coming to BBI I taught Years 2-4 for 5 years in NSW Australia, Year 4 for 4 years working in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea for the International Education Agency and 2 years teaching a Year 7/8 composite class at Kaitao Intermediate in Rotorua. Living in Northpark, Botany, I have been happily married to my husband Steve, an electrician, for 38 years and have 3 adult children. Alana teaches at Somerville Intermediate, Glenn at Tyndale Park Christian School and Shae works for STAR insurance. So we have a few teachers in the family! All three passed through BBI for their intermediate school years and enjoying all the opportunities that BBI provided. I love teaching and seeing students through their developing years to become independent learners and thinkers and caring, open minded citizens. I bring to the board a teacher’s experience as I am still teaching in the classroom, and represent BBI’s teachers' perspectives and viewpoints. Chris Barnes - Property I am a resident of Mellons Bay who moved up to Auckland from Wellington to Auckland in 2009. Cristine and I have two teenage boys; Guy and George both at Macleans College. They keep us very busy with their sporting and recreational activities. Born and raised in Masterton, I graduated from Massey University with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Chemistry, a Post Graduate Diploma of Science, and Business administration. I am an experienced Operations Manager, focusing primarily on food, pharmaceutical and FMCG sectors with a passion for project work. I have served on the BBI Board of Trustees since 2016 when I was seconded and now an elected member. As a board member, I am responsible for the focus on key Property and Personnel portfolios. BBI is a high performing school with an excellent academic and sport record. I am committed to ensuring this is sustained through great leadership, development of staff, well maintained assets and facilities. Providing these will enable our students to thrive both academically and physically in their schooling endeavours. Chris Griffiths – Treasurer I am very proud to be on the BBI board for over twelve years; I find being a trustee is an incredibly rewarding and enjoyable role. I understand my role as a trustee is a combination of looking forward by designing the future of the school, looking back and being accountable for BBI’s performance, acknowledging the requirements of BBI’s stakeholders (including the Crown and the community), and of course being a good employer. Our home is in Mellons Bay, and we have enjoyed full benefit of the wonderful local schools for our three children, which has led them to being successful in their university studies and employment. Recently, I graduated from university with a Master of Business Administration. My major is in Operations and Management, and I am continuing my study as a doctoral candidate at Auckland University of Technology. I will research the experiences of individuals as they foster inclusion within New Zealand manufacturing industries. I work for New Zealand Post as a Senior Project Manager. My role has a strong focus on digital technology within their digital print manufacturing division based in Auckland and Christchurch. It is a role that draws on all my working and learning experiences from my original Trade Certificate in Typography to my more recent study at University. The BBI board benefits by having a combination of longer-term Board members bringing the benefit of experience and reflection, and new Board members who bring new ideas, new curiosity and energy. This combination contributes to the success of the Board. I enjoy my work as a Trustee, working for the benefit of BBI’s community, together with our Principal Diane Parkinson, the Senior Leadership Team, and my fellow Trustees. Wendy Levy - Health and Safety I have lived in Bucklands Beach since 2000, when I moved back to New Zealand with my husband Ellis. We have since had two children, one of whom started at Buckland Beach Intermediate in 2014. I work at an international consulting company as an Associate Director of Project Management, managing a range of projects within New Zealand and overseas. Prior to this I was the company’s Business Systems Manager, responsible for the Quality, Environmental, Health and Safety of over 350 staff working on projects from Siberia to the South pole. Since enrolling my oldest child at Pigeon Mountain Primary School in 2007, I have been actively involved in the school community. I have served as both Secretary and Chairman of the Pigeon Mountain (PMPS) PTA, and played an active role in helping Pigeon Mountain to review and update their health and safety processes. I also attended the BBI School camp at Motutapu in 2014 as a parent helper. My children have different skills, abilities and learning needs, which has made me learn more about the best way to support them so they can achieve their goals. I believe that all students can succeed with the right support from parents, the school and other services as necessary. I am delighted that I have been elected to the BBI Board of Trustees which will allow me to bring my skills and experience to help further the educational aspirations and goals of the school. My portfolio is health and safety. Jocelyn Cameron I am pleased to have been elected to the Board of Trustees by the community. I have wide experience in contract negotiations & project management at a National Executive level. I am used to leading and working in multidisciplinary teams, within strict time constraints. I have extensive experience in strategic development of businesses/goals and believe this will be important in my success of being part of the BBI BOT team. I am a qualified Company Director (GAICD), I have a Masters in Medical Radiations and a MBA (in Business Administration). I have a strong interest in sustainability (studied at University level) and I believe this is another element I can bring to the role; as students are becoming more aware of environmental challenges we are currently facing and have a desire to make a difference. I am a mother of 3 children. My eldest daughter, Charlotte, is a Year 8 student at BBI and is currently a house captain and involved in the leadership programme for last 18 months. My two youngest children will attend BBI as well. I have lived in Half Moon Bay since 2014 and love the lifestyle, educational and sporting opportunities it affords our children & family. I have a passion for public education and I believe my skills and energy will compliment my role on the BOT at BBI. Diane Parkinson - Principal I am very proud to be the Principal of Bucklands Beach Intermediate. My personal history began in a small New Zealand country town where I went on to study at Massey University in Palmerston North. I have enjoyed 33 years of teaching and learning in Auckland. I am fortunate to live in one of the most picturesque parts of New Zealand. My husband and I have two boys are 14 years and 17 years old. Both boys attend the local college. I would value any member of the community to contact me about BBI. We can only enhance what we already do or improve what we already do when our local community provide us with feedback. Certainly, we will listen and do our best to make changes in the best interests of all students. Leonie Wallace Cantabrian at heart, East Auckland is now my home. My husband and I have lived in Half Moon Bay for 14 years and have 2 boys currently at Pigeon Mountain Primary. We love the facilities, beaches, schooling and community feel that East Auckland has to offer. I enjoy being a part of my children’s development and have spent time volunteering on various committees. For the last 4 years I have been on the PTA committee at Pigeon Mountain Primary, with the last 3 as Chairperson. Prior to that I was on the Howick Pakuranga Plunket Volunteer committee as Secretary.

Our School Our school mission statement is: To educate, guide and mentor all students to become successful, internationally minded, lifelong learners. Bucklands Beach Intermediate School opened on 1 February 1976 with a roll of 199 students. Since those early days it has grown significantly. For many years the roll was stable in the mid 500-student range. Additional in-fill housing, immigration, and a growing demand for out of zone places, are all factors in causing the school roll to grow substantially in recent years. Over recent years Government immigration policies have resulted in significant changes to our school population. From a community with a predominant NZ born European population some years ago, we are now a multi–cultural school with the following ethnic balance: NZ European/Pakeha 42.0% Asian 48% Other European 13.5% NZ Maori 4% Other groups 4% A significant challenge for teaching staff is being able to adequately cater for all students owing to the wide range of ability levels present. Many students show a high degree of competence across the curriculum. At the other extreme is a significant number who need considerable additional assistance. Included in this group are the many students from non-English speaking backgrounds. Programmes are in place to provide additional assistance to these students.BBI strives to be at the forefront of digital learning. The use of technology to enhance the learning experience at BBI has seen school invest heavily in hardware and infrastructure during the past 5 years. Approximately 75% of BBI students own personal laptops, which are fully integrated into class programmes. We also run a number of digital classrooms - with a dedication to using personal devices across all learning areas. The ongoing sustainability of International Baccalaureate, Primary Years Programme is an on-going current goal, and connecting this with the New Zealand Curriculum.
